Apparently was rude to his Master's wife and earned himself a month in prison (Newspaper Article may 5, 1842)

I'm wondering now, if when Jane Pow name William Pow, Carpenter as putative father (she's just recalling her own father. There is a William Pow Carpenter in Alwington in 1841 ¹²

bullet Research Notes:

On the 1841 census for Barnstaple, I have found what I belive to be John Powe as an apprentice to a Mr thornby of Boutport road. It is very very hard to read. Doesn't help me to find his parents, as of course he was staying with his master, his age fit reasonable well 15 (especially when you take into account that the 1841 census rounds ages to the nearest 5 for people over 12

In 1851, living in Victoria Road, with Ann wife - is it Mary Ann, if so, age is not quite accurate, as she is listed as 28, John aged 2 was shown, and so was mother - Mary living with son John also born Devon
according to Mr. David Webb (look up volunteer) the 1851 listing has the family listed as PAWE, not POWE, but its obviously the same family. He also checked the 1841 for me and feels that there are no POWES or PAWES there so maybe they were still in Devon at that time

Children on the 1861 include John Gibbs, Charles H, Albert Arthur, Elizabeth Ann adn the younger Frederick Robert. She must have been pregnant with Walter

Interestingly - Neither George who would have been 8 nor either of the two Fredericks were at home on the 1871 census. there again neither was John Gibbs Powe who was 20 and probably married by then. I must check it out

1891 Devon census online free cen project - proved that the JOhn powe born in Cadleigh in 1824 is not my John Powe - because he is still in Devon in 1891 - negative confirmation is better than doubt

as per the Devon Records Research, it seems that wherever John was born, it was not in Barnstaple,
as of March 2005, working onthe assumpiton that he was the illegitimate son of Jane Pow - probably baptized in Monkleigh in late 1823,
